Howling Hummus
A sample recipe for Halloween, or any time you need a good howl ... for children of all ages
For this hearty snack, you will need a blender, a mixer, or a fork and bowl and some muscles to mash
things up. You will need a measuring cup and measuring spoons. You will need a knife and a grown-up
to help you.
Ingredients:
- 1 large 25 ounce can garbanzo beans (chick peas), organic, if possible
- 2-3 Tablespoons tahini (ground sesame seed butter)
- 1-3 cloves of garlic
- juice from 1/4 lemon
- handful of parsley, chopped
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ - ½ cup bean juice, enough to blend mixture
Blend, mix, or mash the above ingredients together until they are smooth. Put it in a bowl.
Now for the fun part---decorating. Who can make the scariest howling face on top of the bowl?
Or put a puddle of hummus on a little plate so each person can make a howling face of their own.
To make the face you will need:
- sliced green olives for slimey eyeballs
- sliced black olives for more eyeballs or eyebrows
- sliced cucumbers for a screaming mouth
- pieces of red and green pepper (cut into strips, then into triangles, for teeth, scary eyes, etc.)
- sprigs of parsley for hair
What else could we use for faces? Use your imagination!
Serve the hummus with strips of white daikon radish ("dragon bones"), strips of red and green pepper
("guts"), and any other gross-sounding names for dipping vegetables you can think of. Let me know
what you come up with!
This snack will give you strong and calm energy and mood, and will help your brain think well. It
helps your teeth and bones grow strong. Try eating this high-protein food for breakfast, and see how
good you feel. Happy and healthy Halloween! And happy howling and feeling strong all year long!
